With a 40% rise in the popularity of Botox*, it comes as no surprise that more myths around this treatment continue to circulate.

“We’re here to bust these myths and provide the truth behind Botox and what to expect when having a Botox treatment.”

Myth #1 Botox will give me a frozen face “plastic” look MYTH BUSTING: The “Frozen Face” look is only as a result of a Botox overdosage. An experienced injector knows exactly how many units to inject to your skin specifically in order to get the desired, natural effect.

Myth #2 If I have enough Botox I’ll have no wrinkles MYTH BUSTING: There are actually 2 types of wrinkles: dynamic and static. Dynamic wrinkles are present with facial movements and can be more easily dealt with by Botox. Static wrinkles remain even when your face is at rest and may need additional, supportive treatments such as fillers or laser.

Myth #3 If I start having Botox I can’t stop or the wrinkles will get worse MYTH BUSTING: If you decide to stop using Botox, of course the wrinkles will gradually return with repeat movements, however they will only return in their original state and will not come back any worse than they were before.

Myth #4 Botox is only used to treat wrinkles MYTH BUSTING: Botox actually has several other useful medical uses, such as muscle spasms and migraines. It may be that you have been recommended Botox for one of these reasons rather than for anti-ageing skin concerns.

Myth #5 Botox and Fillers are the same thing MYTH BUSTING: Botox and dermal fillers are actually totally different substances. They can be used together (or separately) to treat anti-ageing skin concerns. The clue is actually in the name of fillers – they are designed to “fill in” wrinkles and build-up an area, where as Botox works to reduce them.

Myth #6 I can have Botox as often as needed MYTH BUSTING: Typically, the effects of Botox will last around 3-4 months, but results vary patient to patient. It is recommended that you wait around 12 weeks between treatment but this can actually be extended if results are lasting longer for you.

Myth #7 Botox is painful MYTH BUSTING: Botox is barely felt by most patients. There is no necessity for any pain-relief or anaesthetic during the procedure as it is a quick and relatively pain-free procedure. The needle used is also very fine meaning skin trauma is kept to an absolute minimum.

Myth #8 Botox is toxic and unsafe MYTH BUSTING: Botox was first used successfully and safely in the 1970’s, since this time the drug has established a safe history. There has been no record of death due to overdose and no long-term side effects have been noticed to date. It would take a dose of more than 100 times the average dose given for cosmetic use for treatment to be fatal.

Myth #9 Botox results should be immediate MYTH BUSTING: On average the result of a Botox treatment will take around 14 days to fully take effect. In some cases, such as a neck lift or jawline slim, results can even take up to 6 weeks as the treatment area is much larger. Everyone is different so results will differ patient to patient, but nobody will ever see immediate results.
